The Long Lonely Battle
Words and music by Larry Holder / Elton Smith · 2026
Key of Dm · 108 BPM · 4/4 · Praise · Luke 23:34
Verse 1
Long before this world began
From my Father came the plan
To ransom captive sinners from the grave
As a humble servant born
Into a world so lost and torn
I lay down my life the world to save
Refrain 1
I lay down my life the world to save, world to save
I lay down my life the world to save
Verse 2
In the dark, I was betrayed
By soldiers led away
Yet for this very hour I had come
As the Lamb without a stain
There I stood, in anguish and pain
A long, lonely battle to be won
Refrain 2
With a long, lonely battle to be won, to be won
With a long lonely battle to be won
Chorus 1
I came to vanquish and I came to save the lost
With a long, lonely battle to be won
My pain and suffering was required to pay the cost
With a long, lonely battle to be won
With a long, lonely battle to be won, to be won
With a long lonely battle to be won
Verse 3
Nailed upon the curs-ed tree
Suffering for all to see
To finish the task I had begun
"Jewish king" my sign proclaimed
Yet I heard them mocking my name
Forgive them, they know not what they've done
Refrain 3
Forgive them; they know not what they've done, what they've done
Forgive them; they know not what they've done
Verse 4
To this world, I was dead and gone
Still my loving spirit lives on
In three days, the vict'ry was declared
As I live, so too can you
Take my hand, be born anew
We'll share life eternal over there
Refrain 4
We will share life eternal over there, over there
We will share life eternal over there
Chorus 2
I came to vanquish and I came to save the lost
So rejoice for the battle has been won
My pain and suffering was required to pay the cost
So rejoice, for the battle has been won, has been won
Yes, rejoice, for the battle has been won
Oh rejoice, for the battle has been won, has been won
Yes, rejoice, for the battle has been won
